"Proclaiming Victory Through Christ"

I Corinthians 15:57

In Memory of our Founding Pastor

Pastor Sims and his wife Jean were married for over 48 years.  They have 6 children; Terry, Michael, Rachael, Daniel, Abigail, and Anna.  They are blessed to have 7 grandchildren.

One of the greatest examples of the “Power of Salvation and God’s Word” is the testimony of lives that have been radically changed.  Pastor Robert T. Sims had that type of testimony.  Here is just a portion of his testimony and how God led him to found Victory Baptist Church just over 32 years ago.

Robert T. Sims was born on July 26, 1952, on the Army Base of Ft. Rucker, Alabama.  His parents moved several months later to Florida where they eventually settled down in Lakeland, FL when Robert was 5 years old.  He attended the public school system and finished at Lakeland Senior High.

Robert joined the United States Marine Corp on May 27, 1970.  He was trained on Parris Island & stationed on the Island of Okinawa Japan during the Vietnam War.  After serving three years, he was Honorably Discharged on April 27, 1973.

It was at the age of 25 that Robert came under God’s convicting power and his life was transformed.  Instantly, his life changed from a life of abusing drugs and alcohol and living an immoral life style to one of a new creature in Christ. It was God’s grace that took him from playing in Rock and Country Western Bands to the front row of a Holiness Church.

                             Call To Preach

It was in that little Holiness Church that God called Robert T. Sims into the ministry.  When he shared with his Pastor his “call to preach”, his Pastor asked him to preach that week in the mid-week service.   His Dad came to hear him.   That night was also his Father’s birthday and his Dad said that it was one of his greatest birthdays!

Robert started receiving calls to preach in churches throughout the area.  Several asked him to accept their offer of pastoring their churches but Robert felt that “A call to preach was a call to prepare”!  Hence, he sold all of his belongings and led his family to Hobe Sound, FL.

                              Bible College

Robert enrolled in Hobe Sound Bible College to begin his formal Biblical Studies.   He entered HSBC in the fall of 1979 graduating in 1983 with a B.A. Degree in Biblical Education.  While attending Hobe Sound Bible College, Pastor Sims was enrolled in the Ministerial Department.  He was chosen his Junior Year to receive a Ministerial Scholarship for his leadership abilities.  He was the Ministerial President of his graduating class.

While attending HSBC, he took full classes, worked off campus as a night security guard, grounds keeper on the college campus, and had his own lawn maintenance business.  In addition to fulltime school and work, he made the time to work and volunteer in Christian Ministries.

                             Christian Ministries

Pastor Sims was in charge of several ministries.  He preached weekly at the Belle Glade Correctional Institute for three years.  It was here that Pastor Sims reached out to incarcerated men in the hopes they would repent and receive Jesus as their Savior.  On one occasion, a prisoner with “three life sentences” for murder came forward during the invitation to pray.  The following week, the same man came to the prison service with a large “Family Bible” that his Mother had sent him.  Pastor Sims saw many prisoners’ lives changed as with this man through the power of salvation!

Another ministry of Pastor Sims was preaching at the Jamaican Camps located in a tiny agricultural community situated on a drained swamp forty miles west of the affluent Palm Beach area and contained some of the richest, most fertile soil, in the United States.  Although a billion-dollar sugar cane industry thrives there, Belle Glade is home to some of the country’s most painful poverty.  The Jamaicans’ typically endure difficult living conditions for nine months out of the year returning to their homelands for only the remaining three months.   The windowless barracks-style housing rooms 150 - 200 workers at a time and is off-limits to non-laborers.  However, the Jamaicans are a deeply religious people and were allowed to have church services within a designated area.  It was there Robert focused exclusively on faith and character and brought the message of “Good News” to these workers each and every Sunday evening for three years.

In addition to the services at the Belle Glade Correctional Institute and the Jamaican camps, Pastor Sims began each Sunday morning preaching at Indian Town Bible Chapel where he led several other students to prepare Bible Studies for the indigent children of the area to come and to learn the scriptures.  The college sent out buses each Saturday to invite the children and on Sunday the buses would stop and pick up the children for “Children’s Church”.

Pastor Sims did this for three years not fully knowing that God was preparing him for the work that lay ahead.

After graduating from college, Pastor Sims and his family moved to Brent, Alabama where he was pastor of Friendship Bible Methodist Church for a year and a half.  During his time there, Pastor Sims felt it was God’s will that he move back to Florida due to a family illness and the family relocated to Zephyrhills.  Pastor Sims worked at Faith Baptist Church for 6 months as a Youth Pastor to help out the church until he found God’s will for his own place of ministering.  It was then that he felt God laid it on his heart to start a new work in Zephyrhills.

                             Founding of Victory Baptist Church
On September 9, 1985, Pastor Sims started Victory Baptist Church.  Church services were first held in a rented building.  In 1988 the doors were opened for VBC to purchase and start construction on their own church facility.  Since the start of September of 1985, the church has experienced three building programs.  The church has built a sanctuary and a gymnasium which now sits on a total of 21.7 acres of land and thanks to God is paid in full!  Victory is looking forward to building a new sanctuary for worship in the near future.

Our church is Conservative, Bible Based, Christ Centered, and Exalts Jesus in every service.  We make no apology for singing the Old Fashioned Hymns.  We believe the Bible is inspired from Genesis to Revelation and has no errors at all!  Souls are being saved, lives are being changed and the Lord is building his church!

  Come and be blessed!
